KANS PROJECT 2009 Print

The KANS project 2008-2009 was a huge success. For the first time in the history of the project there was also an exchange of students! This proved to be highly beneficial to both the individuals that took part in the actual trips as well as those that maintained contact via e-mail and the weblogs.

The project however has a legacy that is forever etched in Cyberspace. Take some to to check out the wonderful blogs and websites made by the students of the 2nd form.

KANS Trip to Holland 2008 Print
During the week of April 21-25, Mrs. Wilson-de Weever, Mrs. Lejuez, and Ms. Lambert taught at the “Regionale Scholengemeenschap Hoeksche Waard” This is a high school in Holland. Each class period consisted of 50 minutes; per day the teachers taught three different classes. This educational experience was great for the students as well as for teachers.  Day 1 After enjoying a relaxing weekend, the teachers got a tour of the school. Mr. Hans and Mr. Gertjan assigned students as tour guides. The students spoke English while conducting the tour. The students did a good job.  Day 2 After defining the word environment, students were introduced to anagrams. For this activity, they were required to list as many words as they could find in the word environment. Some of the students’ examples were: on, vent, ten, net. During the second part of the class, students made a pop-up book, which was used at the end of the week. Students were shown a power point presentation that tested their knowledge about St. Maarten.  Day 3 Students were introduced to haikus and writing syllables. Following this, they engaged in a vocabulary building activity that focused on nature. Students were required to list definitions, antonyms, synonyms, and words associated with nature. Then through a power point presentation, they focused on the importance of nature and the environment.  Day 4 On this day, all three classes went on a fieldtrip to Tiengemeten, which is an area that’s about to become a nature reserve.  Day 5 Students wrote two haikus (one in Dutch and one in English) in their pop-up books for their correspondents in St. Maarten. The aim of this assignment was to focus on aspects of nature that they had observed during the field trip. During period 6, the students gathered in the canteen area to watch two DVDs; however, technical difficulties prevented this. The three teachers presented Mr. Hans and Mr. Gertjan and the students tokens of appreciations from St. Maarten. In the evening, the teachers involved in the KANS project had a farewell dinner.

What is the KANS-project? Print
kans_emailAt the beginning of January 2007 the students of Form 2 started their Kans-project. Kans is a project that encourages students in the Netherlands Antilles to contact students in the Netherlands. Kans. It is an initiative of the European Platform to enhance cooperation between schools within the Kingdom. Our Form 2 students write e-mails to students of an exchange school -- the RSG 'Hoeksche Waard' in Oud-Beijerland. In the first e-mail students introduced themselves, the school, their hobbies and their family. In subsequent e-mails, students were asked to go more in depth about their environment etc. Using this information, students in the Netherlands were asked to create posters about Sint Maarten. During Information Technology classes our students created small newspapers about the Netherlands. In March, two teachers from the Netherlands will come to our school to teach us about the Netherlands. For more information about thersglogo school in the Netherlands  and the KANS-project follow this link: General Website of RSG 'Hoeksche Waard' Website about the KANS-project
