Archeology
Historical tree project Print
This schoolyear the Simarc group has started a new exciting program: the historical tree preservation program. The Simarc students will make a collection of historical trees on St. Maarten. They will measure all trees that are over 1 meter in diameter and register them. Simarc hopes that in the future, the Government of St. Maarten will adopt a tree policy. This would make it illegal to cut down historical trees.

Introduction Print
During the 2004/2005 school year, Dr. Jay Haviser started an archeology group for students on Sint Maarten. St. Dominic Students showed a lot of enthusiasm from the beginning. Joy-Ann, Maryenis, Kippy and Matthew started full of  determination with the first project: the Emilio Wilson Estate. They were introduced to the fieldwork and the lab work of archeology. Every Monday afternoon, Dr. Jay Haviser gives lectures and students do the lab work. In the weekends we go out in the field and work up some sweat! Last year we got the chance to visit Saba and St. Eustatius and we made a time capsule that was buried on the boardwalk. In the plan for this school year we is the Fort Amsterdam project.

Simarc meets Job Cohen Print
fritz_154On August the 27th the SIMARC students met the mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen. Mr. Cohen showed a lot of interest in the Fort Amsterdam project. Dr. Haviser showed the mayor around and pointed out the hard work of the students. After the tour there was time for a quick picture.

Simarc experience in St. Kitts Print
simarcst_kittsmay07072From May 14-15, 2007 the SIMARC team traveled to the Island of St. Christopher (called St. Kitts) to investigate how their country deals with heritage and archaeological sites. This trip was possible due to the sponsorship of the Rotary club Mid-Isle St. Maarten and a private donation from Tony and Lisa simarcst_kittsmay07029Rice of the USA. Other supporters of this fieldtrip were the St. Christopher Historical Society (particularly Ms. Hazel Brooks) Domino's pizza, WINN FM radio St. Kitts, Mr. Glenville Rogers and Dr. Frank Irvine.

SIMARC to go on fieldtrip to St. Kitts Print
The archeology group will be making a trip to St. Kitts this year. On May the 13th and 14th, Maryenis, Matthew, Kippy, brimstoneJayesh and Mrs. Anita will be going on this excursion. Unfortunately, Joy-Ann cannot join us, because she has exams to make. The idea to visit St. Kitts stems from our trip last year to Saba and St. Eustatius. When the group was on St. Eustatius, Dr. Grant Gilmoore of the archeology center talked to us about the European trade ships in the 17th century while pointing out the sea route between Statia and St. Kitts. This, of course, piqued the curiosity of the SIMARC students and they decided that they wanted to visit St. Kitts. Dr. Jay started to look for funding. Thanks to a generous gift of American tourists (see article below) and some other sources, it became possible to make this trip. We are looking forward to this history fieldtrip.
