Introduction Print

Attending a mathematics class at St. Dominic High School is an experience of a life time. Mathematics is a compulsory subject and relates or influences majority of the other disciplines directly or indirectly. Mathematics should be considered as a means of communication to display facts or related facts.

This subject develops an understanding of these areas, it is also expected that the course will enable students to:

I.    develop mathematical thinking, understanding and creativity,
II.   develop skills in using mathematics as a tool for other disciplines,
III.  develop the ability to communicate through the use of mathematics,
IV.  develop the ability to use mathematics to model and solve real world problems,
V.   gain access to mathematics programs at tertiary institutions.

Besides using several books to prepare students for the C.X.C. examinations there are other activities to enhance the creativity to make the subject more realistic and hands on. In order to expose a level of competition students are exposed to international and national contests. Lately only the “Kangaroo Wedstrijd” is held among the first and second formorigamiers with plans for the third formers.
Research skills are also developed. After studying prominent mathematicians or scientists, an oral presentation(s) is required of the students in the first and second form. Origami is for the first, second and third formers. The difficulty of this program increases as the forms progress. Creativity is developed when students form their shapes and prisms with origami and is displayed for the entire school.
In order to link topics of mathematics to reality excursions for several topic areas are organized. For the topic of Geometry a kite trip is experienced and for Monetary Exchange a excursion to the local bank is often seen as a reality check to students. Students apply all these skills and continue preparing for fourth form and first two term of form five. For the most part majority of the students perform to the best of their ability and successfully continue to tertiary education!
