Chemistry focuses on the ways in which materials behave and has tremendous influence on our lives, affecting such areas as industry, health, the environment an even our leisure time activities. The importance of chemistry in the society and its power to contribute to the changing global patterns are now so great that its inclusion as part of a general education is essential.

The CXC Syllabus is designed to help students to;
The syllabus is divided into three sections:
SECTION A
:      Principles of Chemistry
SECTION B:  -  Organic Chemistry 
                       -   Inorganic Chemistry
SECTION C:     Chemistry in the Home

The syllabus is examined for general proficiency certification.
The skills, students are expected to have developed on completion of this syllabus, have been grouped under three main headings, namely: 
 ۩     Knowledge and comprehension
 ۩     Use of knowledge
 ۩     Experimental skills.

Form of the examination
Paper I: An objective test consisting of 60 multiple choice items on section A and B of the syllabus. Paper II: Compulsory structured questions and extended essay questions grouped in pairs .Candidates will be allowed to answer one question from each pair. One pair of question will be on section C.

  • Appreciate and understand natural phenomena and the ways in which materials behave. 
  • Understand and use the scientific method.  
  • Understand how chemistry enables materials to be used in the service of mankind, in the Caribbean and elsewhere.  
  • Make use of chemical data, concepts, principles and terminology in communicating chemical information.  
  • Understand basic concepts in sufficient depth to provide an adequate foundation for specialization.
